Protecting God-Given Calling in African Churches
By Olufemi Ikumapayi (Eaglevision)
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
Across Africa, many young believers are losing their destiny not because God has abandoned them, but because human leaders have misused spiritual authority. Stories abound from Tanzania, Nigeria, and other countries where men who are supposed to be spiritual fathers become destiny killers, crushing calling and confidence under fear, intimidation, and false prophecy.
The Problem: False Authority and Control
One alarming pattern is leaders claiming to grant or withdraw anointing at will. A young man in Tanzania reported a pastor saying, “You will fail because I have withdrawn my anointing and coverage over you.” This is spiritually abusive and unbiblical. Anointing is not a human commodity—it comes from God alone, and no man can revoke it.
How Destiny is Killed
- Ownership of Gifts
- Leaders treat God-given anointing as theirs to control, stifling initiative and divine calling.
- Fear-Based Teaching
- Preachers, teachers, and prophets frequently use fear to manipulate members: “If you do not obey, you will fail, be cursed, or lose your destiny.”
- Prophetic Intimidation
- Wrong prophetic words, given without discernment or Scripture, paralyze young people rather than empower them.
- Destruction of Calling
- Talented believers abandon their purpose, feel unworthy, or live in constant anxiety, effectively losing the destiny God designed for them.
Biblical Correction
- Anointing Comes From God Alone
- 1 John 2:20: “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.”
- Romans 11:29: “For God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.”
- Spiritual Fathers Guide, Not Control
- True mentors sharpen, teach, and encourage in Scripture and faith (Proverbs 27:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:12–13).
- Freedom in Christ is Absolute
- Galatians 5:1 reminds believers that Christ sets them free. No human can enslave, curse, or revoke God’s calling.
- Faith and Responsibility Empower Destiny
- Destiny is activated through obedience, diligence, prayer, and alignment with God’s Word, not through fear of men.
A Call to African Churches
- Leaders must cease controlling anointing; God alone distributes spiritual empowerment.
- Believers must discern prophetic words, testing everything against Scripture (1 Thess 5:21).
- Mentorship should nurture faith, not dominate or instill fear.
- Young men and women must stand firm in Christ, walking in freedom, responsibility, and obedience to God’s call.
Example Prayer: “Lord, I refuse fear and manipulation. Strengthen me in Your Word, guide me by Your Spirit, and empower me to walk in the calling and anointing You have placed on my life.”
Conclusion
Human leaders are fallible, and some misuse authority to crush destiny. God’s anointing and calling are irrevocable. African churches must protect young believers, raise mentors who guide instead of dominate, and foster freedom in Christ. Destiny killers must be exposed, and God-given destiny must be nurtured with truth, courage, and spiritual wisdom.
Olufemi Ikumapayi (Eaglevision) prays that every young believer in Africa will walk boldly in their calling, free from fear, manipulation, and false prophecy, fully empowered by Christ to fulfill their God-given destiny.
